Favorite Video Friday – A Golden Day

December 9, 2016 5 comments

I’m going to make a bold statement here today, Golden Retrievers are God’s little angels. There is something about a Golden that exudes happiness. But more than that, they bring out that happiness in the humans around them.

I think it is their attentiveness to people and their moods, their boundless joy, and ability to express that joy, and their happy, smiling faces that makes them the angels they are.

Wago, the dog in this week’s video, is not exception. I dare you to withhold a smile after watching Wago’s day. He is such a love!

I hope Wago brings you some joy this Friday morning.

Have a great weekend!

Favorite Video Friday – Puppy + First Snowfall = ADORABLE

February 19, 2015 6 comments

It’s been a tough week for us and for many of our doggie friends this week.

Daisy had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on Tuesday and ended up spending an extra night in ICU. Our friend Mya, unexpectedly spent a few nights in the same ICU when her gallbladder burst and she was given a 50/50 chance of making it. Another doggie friend had her lymph nodes removed to confirm she had what was suspected to be cancer, and yet another doggie friend (and fellow Sheltie) was diagnosed with a carcinoma on Monday. She undergoes surgery Friday morning (please send her a little love and healing light her way please).

Fortunately, we also got quite a bit of good news too. Daisy is finally home and seems to be on the road to recovery. Miss Mya may not have a gall bladder anymore, but she has her life and is doing well. And, Jazzy’s lymph node biopsies came back negative for cancer. Yahoo!

We are really hoping the trend continues for our friend Malibu.

Given the tough week and the good news we have had so far, it seemed only right that we celebrate with a fun, light-hearted, cute little video of a puppy enjoying her first snowfall. We all need something to smile about this week.

I hope you find it just as fun and joyful as we did.
Happy Friday everyone!

Favorite Video Friday – Please play with me

November 1, 2013 8 comments

Today’s Favorite Video Friday is all about Golden Retriever cuteness.

I’ve been holding onto this one for some time, looking for just the right time of year to share it. Then I realized that this video is too cute not to share any time of the year.

Is there anyone who doesn’t love a Golden Retriever? They are the most sensitive, attentive and loving dogs I have ever had the pleasure of caring for. I really do love them.

Meet the adorably sweet Wogan and Matsi. Your heart will melt over these two.

Happy Friday everyone!

Favorite Video Friday – Summer Dogs and Summer Songs

May 31, 2013 10 comments

As I was listening to the radio yesterday morning, I heard the radio hosts (Jason and Alexis and Marley) discussing favorite summer songs. You know, those songs that make you roll down your car windows, crank your radio up, and sing at the top of your voice.

Of course, my mind  immediately went to two of my favorite summer songs – Make Me Lose Control by Eric Carmen and Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith (I know, I’m old). I have more, but I don’t think you’d want me to list them. 🙂

Anyways, thinking about my favorite summer songs had me looking for a good summer video I could share with you today. I thought about the usual dog beach videos, but nothing seemed to fit the bill. In fact, nothing really seemed to be right for today – until this one. Think summer fun with a dog accompanied by a good summer song.

I hope you enjoy it. So do you have a favorite summer song that you love to crank up in your car? Please share. I would love to know what songs get you going in the summertime.

Happy Friday everyone!

What do you think? Can an animal shelter also breed and sell puppies?

January 29, 2013 64 comments

PugRecently, a friend shared a website with me that left both of us pretty disturbed. As animal welfare advocates we often see and hear things that can be pretty disturbing – puppy mills, animal abuse, animal neglect, etc. but this was one that seemed pretty wrong, at least on the surface.

It left us asking a lot of questions, including:

  • How can a rescue or shelter claim to be saving dogs when it is breeding dogs and selling their puppies?
  • How does a rescue or shelter legitimize the fact that they are selling dogs when there are so many dogs already in sitting in shelters needing to be rescued?
  • If a rescue or shelter breeds dogs and sells their puppies, can they really be a rescue or shelter?
  • Can a breeder claim to be a rescue or shelter, but really just be a front for selling dogs?
  • How can a rescue or shelter breed a 7-year-old dog and still be considered a shelter or rescue?
  • How can a state allow a breeder to be registered as a no-kill shelter too? Isn’t that some sort of state law loophole?

I can’t help but think something is wrong here. It doesn’t pass the smell test. But, I thought I would let you, the reader, weigh in and share what you think. Below are some screen shots of the website in question. I would love your thoughts on this.

What do you think? Is this a puppy mill or a shelter? Or is it a breeder masquerading as a shelter?

Their Mission Statement begins with…

These are the quality that Have a Heart dog homes has to improve and care for the homeless and unwanted of the No-Kill shelter that they live on.

The breeding and puppies that come from these AKC dogs pay to build buildings, pay  large electric bills and fence the 10 acres that is needed for all that are here.

Golden Barns

They also say “This shelter has no choice but to breed some to support the many that never leave.”

Their puppies are sold on and Next Day Pets (Next Day Pets is a well-known website for selling puppies. Many puppy millers use this site to sell their puppies.)

Golden Barns

There were only 3 dogs listed on their Adopt a Dog page. Here are two of them.

The majority of the website was focused on the breeder dogs and their puppies, including 7-year-old Angelique (who just had her last litter) and Cabella (no age given).

Clicking on the Breeders tab provides you with some additional information:

We will have more Goldendoodles and Golden Retriever puppies
in the spring.
Please call or email to reserve.

Also puppies seen on and Next

AKC bred Standard Poodle puppies ready now.

Golden Barns

Although the site had a spot for you to Adopt a Cat, it appears there were no cats available – yet.

Golden Barns

Their Happy Adoptions page features quite a few customer comments, but it appears many of the “adoptions” are puppies from the breeder dogs. In fact, I couldn’t find one picture of an adopted dog that wasn’t a Golden Retriever, Goldendoodle or Poodle – all puppies and all the same breed or breeds as the breeder dogs.

Golden Barns

According to their About Us page they “are now licensed per state laws as a No-Kill with breeders through the DATCP.” which is the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Is it possible that they would provide a breeder with a shelter license? It seems so. Their last inspection was just this past month.

Favorite Video Friday – The Dog Days of Summer

August 23, 2012 17 comments

I can’t believe summer is almost over. Here in Minnesota you can tell it’s nearing the end when the Minnesota State Fair begins. It’s a rite of passage for most Minnesotans – food, fun, people watching. What could be better?

Already the pool at Casa del Mel has closed and soon the all the kids in the neighborhood will be lining up for the school bus. Can winter be far behind?

This week’s Favorite Video Friday is an homage to the season that is yet to come – winter. Just a little reminder that the fun doesn’t have to end with the end of summer.

Too soon?

Yeah, I thought so too. Instead, here is a short little video that celebrates the dog days of summer.

Happy Friday!

Favorite Video Friday – Devoted the Service Dog

August 9, 2012 12 comments

This week’s Favorite Video Friday is a bit on the long side (just over 9 minutes long), but I was so moved by the story behind it that I knew I wanted to share it. You can’t help but have admiration for those who help to train service dogs, especially this one.

Make sure you at least catch Devoted’s progress around the seven-minute mark. It’s pretty amazing.

Happy Friday everyone!

I hope your dog inspires you to do something fun this weekend. 🙂

What’s Your State’s Most Popular Dog Breed?

March 28, 2012 8 comments

Labrador Retrievers seem to be the most popular breed throughout the United States.

Yesterday, I came across an interesting report by Kristen Seymour over at Vet Street. The headline caught my attention almost immediately “Top Dogs Across America: 10 Most Popular Breeds by State.” Who wouldn’t be interested to find out which breeds are most popular in their state? Not me!

I decided to take a stab at guessing what the most popular breeds were first. Most of my guesses were based on some of my old doggie clients and some of our most popular friends at the dog park, but would I be right?

Here were my guesses:

1. Labrador Retriever
2. Golden Retriever (My most popular and plentiful doggie clients.)
3. Labradoodle (I see them everywhere here.)
4. Yorkshire Terrier
5. German Shepherd
6. Alaskan Husky (We do live in Minnesota after all!)
7. Poodle
8. Pitbull Terrier (You wouldn’t think that an unpopular and much maligned breed would be on my list, but I think Minnesota may be a bit more progressive than most other states when it comes to pitbulls.)
9. Beagle
10. German Shorthair Pointer

(P.S. I would have chosen Mutt if I could have done so. It’s by far the most common type of dog I see everywhere in Minnesota.)

So how close was I? Check it out.

1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd Dog
3. Chihuahua
4. Golden Retriever
5. Shih Tzu
6. Yorkshire Terrier
7. American Pit Bull Terrier
8. Boxer
9. Australian Shepherd
10. English Springer Spaniel

Oh well. Five out of ten isn’t bad. Is it?

So what breed was most popular in your state?
What surprised you most about your state’s Top 10 Popular Breeds list?
