Favorite Video Friday – The Young Once, Happy Dogs

December 15, 2011 6 comments

Recently, I was feeling a bit nostalgic for the snowy winter days of my childhood. You know those snowy days that had an almost magical quality to them and made you feel as if the only thing that mattered was the beauty that surrounded you. The adult world was something you weren’t required to be concerned about and snow days were always something to look forward to – sledding all day followed by a good cup of hot cocoa and maybe a nap.

I’m not sure if it was that nostalgia that made me choose this week’s video or if it was the music that accompanied it. Either way, there is a innocence here that appeals to me. These dogs seem so young and without a care in the world. I remember being that way once too. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Dog Costumes That Fight Breed Specific-Legislation?

When I first saw this posted on Facebook, I laughed. But the more I thought about it the more I wondered… Is this a serious product? Or, a tongue in cheek commentary on the ridiculousness of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)?

Either way, the message that is conveyed is one worth sharing.

Dog Breed Discrimination: Does Your Dog Do It?

Daisy

Dogs can be funny sometimes. Take my Daisy. She likes other dogs well enough, but has never really shown a lot of interest in playing with them. She will wag her tail at them, sniff them, maybe even go greet them, but that’s about it… except when it comes to Brittany Spaniels. With Brittany’s, Daisy appears to have a love like no other, especially for a little guy we know named Scudder. When she sees Scudder or any other Brittany Spaniel, she gets excited, starts bouncing around like a puppy, and offers a play bow or two. It’s unexplainable. For some reason, Daisy has come to discriminate which dog breeds are fun and interesting.

Jasper

Jasper on the other hand likes to play with almost every dog he meets, with the exception of one dog breed, German Shepherds. He gets all bent out of shape over them. I suspect that it all boils down to one interaction with a German Shepherd at our dog park, Roscoe. Roscoe is a gorgeous and sweet boy (a descendent of Rin Tin Tin), but he has a habit of reaching over a dog’s shoulder and mouthing their neck – not exactly acceptable behavior in the dog world. Roscoe tried this move once with Jasper. Just once, because Jasper let him know that he would not be tolerating that kind of behavior. Roscoe backed off. Message had been received.

It was a small incident as dog interactions go, but since that time Jasper has come to see all shepherds as trouble. He clearly discriminates certain dog breeds from others. In fact, I would even venture to say that he has come to generalize his interaction with Roscoe to all German Shepherds. Interesting isn’t it?

So I am wondering… Does your dog have a special affinity for a certain dog breed? Or, perhaps an extreme dislike? Does your dog discriminate between dog breeds?
