What’s Your Dog Preference? Boys or Girls?

The other day, a friend and I were walking around the dog park and discussing her search for a dog. She was looking to adopt a dog and had been researching it for quite some time. During our discussion, she mentioned that her husband only wanted a girl dog. Curious, I asked her why. I can’t remember the exact reasoning, but it made me wonder if I had a gender preference when it came to dogs.

The first dog my family ever had was a boy. He was a terrier-poodle mix named Teaco. My mother and dad got him when we were so young that we never really thought about gender. Our second dog was my Sheltie, Alicia. She was the runt of the litter and I brought her home to make sure she got enough food. I don’t think I ever thought about whether she was a boy or girl. I was more concerned with her health. It was while I was caring for her that I fell in love with her.

Since then, most of my dogs have been girls and I have no idea why this is the case. I never thought I had a preference for boy or girl dogs before this conversation, but now I wonder. Did I really have a preference and just never realized it before? Or, did I simply end up with more girls by chance? Jasper is a boy and I never considered not adopting him because he was a boy. So maybe it’s chance that I have had more girls than boys? Does gender really play a role in my preferences?

So what about you? Do you have a gender preference when it comes to choosing your pet? And if so, what things played into your decision to choose a boy over a girl?
