Favorite Video Friday – Do you forgive me?

November 24, 2017 3 comments

Coming together over the holidays can be so lovely. Reconnecting with family and friends, creating new memories and having fun is what Thanksgiving is all about.

Of course, in all this togetherness and family time, there are moments when we may step on each others toes. In those times, it is best to ask for forgiveness and say “I’m sorry.”

In Ralphie’s case, a little stare and a sincere apology is all it takes to get mom back in his good graces. I recommend you watch the in full screen. The look on Ralphie’s face is not to be missed. I couldn’t stop laughing.

I hope all of you have a lovely Thanksgiving and have a lovely holiday season.

Happy Friday everyone!

“Cuddle-bug” dogs – Do you have one?

January 24, 2012 50 comments

I was thinking about “cuddle-bug” dogs the other day and pondering the fact that throughout all the dogs I have had in my life, I’ve never once had a full-time cuddle-bug dog. Do you know what I mean? The type of dog that just wants to be near you all of the time and would prefer to cuddle up on the couch with you when you’re reading a good book or watching TV or having a sick day.

Daisy likes to cuddle for a belly rub in the morning, but that’s pretty much it. Jasper likes belly rubs but would prefer to play ball. And then there’s Lady, my off and on cuddle-bug dog. Ever since she’s come home, she’s been more affectionate, often lying on the couch next to me as I pet her or give her a belly rub (Last week I gave her a body massage and now she’s really affectionate!). But, being a Sheltie, she doesn’t like to cuddle for too long because she gets too hot. So as you can imagine cuddle sessions are rather fleeting here at Casa del Mel.

Given that I’ve always adopted dogs who are not cuddle-bug type of dogs, it made me wonder… is this my preference or merely chance? What do you think? Do you have a cuddle-bug dog? Do you have a preference when it comes to dogs and their need to cuddle? It seems to me that little dogs are more likely to cuddle than the bigger dogs, but maybe I’m wrong. Do you have a large cuddle-bug dog?

Goodbye Gabe.

August 28, 2011 28 comments

This past Friday my friend Beth had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to her beloved Great Dane, Gabe.

Gabe was a big, beautiful Harlequin. He had a big heart, a gentle spirit and the most adorable and endearing face I have ever seen. She adopted him from the Minnesota Valley Humane Society, where we both volunteered as dog walkers, when he was about 4 years old.

You know how they say that dogs pick us? Well, I believe he had her at “Hello.” I’ve never seen a dog bond to someone as quickly as he did with Beth. He loved her deeply and with utter devotion. I believe he would have followed her to the ends of the earth.

When I visited them last weekend, I knew his time was near. It broke my heart to see him struggle to hold his back legs up so he could get a few pets and ear rubs from me. What a beautiful wonderful soul. Yup. He had me at “Hello” too. I know Beth, her husband, and her daughters are missing him terribly. Maybe that’s why this posting on a friend’s page resonated so much with me today when I saw it.

‎”Dog’s lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions.” ~ Dean Koontz, from “The Darkest Evening of the Year”

Godspeed Gabe. May your legs once again be strong when you stand to greet your momma at that Rainbow Bridge.

Favorite Video Friday – Honey the Great Dane

August 4, 2011 9 comments

I saw the cute little video below featuring Honey the Great Dane and Lemon the cat. I thought it would be a fun one to share with you all today. But, then I saw another video featuring the very same Honey and couldn’t help but share it too. After all, it’s not every day you see a Great Dane dog agility AND dancing!

Honey may be the luckiest and most adorable dog around. She certainly is loved. You can see more of Honey at

Enjoy! Happy Friday!

Favorite Video Friday – Big Dog, Little Dog

July 28, 2011 12 comments

I found this video while looking for something else and couldn’t help but marvel at how well this big dog played with the little puppy. Certainly if this dog had wanted to play rough it could have, but instead she played gently with the pup.

I often see Great Danes at our dog park and the dogs they always seem to play so well with little dogs. Who can guess why, but it sure is adorable.

Happy Friday!
