And then I saw this on the way home from the dog park tonight. There was a black horse too, and what looked to be two vaqueros riding them. So cool.

Dogs. Horses. We have a long way to go.

Just the other day I was speaking with a friend about her horse. A beautiful mare with a gentle disposition.

During our conversation, she shared with me that she had switched from using a bridle with a bit (the traditional gear for a horse) to a bitless one. I had never even heard of one before. She said it works similar to a Gentle Leader for dogs. I thought it was a novel concept. It had never even occurred to me that there even was such a thing!

Then, she shared with me how she had been rather nervous that the instructor in a class she was taking would make a comment on her bitless bridle. Or, that she might be admonished for using one. What a shame. She said that the horse world tends to be resistant to this kind of bridle because many believe you can’t control a horse with a bitless bridle.

Kind of that same mindset we see with folks who use choker chains or pinch collars isn’t it? A dog couldn’t possibly be well-trained or walk well on a leash without one right?

Luckily, her instructor did something completely different. He complimented her on what a nice horse she had. I am so happy that was her experience instead of the one she was fearing.

It appears it’s not just the dog world that has some outmoded ideas lurking around.
