Favorite Video Friday – Doggie ingenuity or training?

A dog training friend of mine shared this video and I was blown away. Not by the ingenuity of the dog (although that was impressive), but by the fact that he appears to use a tool to get what he wants. I have always known chimps could use tools to get what they want (like using a reed or stick to stick into an ant hill to get ants), but I figured that dogs were not at that level.

Either I was very wrong, or this dog was very well trained.

The question is which one is it?? What do you think?

Here is this week’s Favorite Friday Video.

Happy Friday everyone!

I’m thinking that he figured it out for himself. That dog needs to go hunting and put his skills to use.

I’d have to say smart. Never underestimate the ingenuity of our dogs. We all know dogs learn, so why wouldn’t it be logical to think that they learn even when we aren’t teaching! Willow is notoriously smart, she can open doors (the lever kind), she work the kitty gate door, she can open the gate to our yard, our back door (from the outside), she knows how to operate the windows, locks, and a work around to the window locks in my truck… not one of these things were actively taught, she picked them up from watching us.

We had a beagle that did the same thing. He also would dig through the cupboard and find a cat food can with the pull top. He would hold the can with his paws and hook his tooth on the pull top, open it, and eat it all. He was a handful! He was always doing something.

Very smart dog! I just hope he doesn’t hurt himself by jumping from the counter to the floor.
