Life with a dog named Jasper

Sometimes God gives us a dog to challenge us,
and sometimes he gives us one to make us laugh.
Sometimes he gives you a dog that is adorably cute,
and he melts your heart.

And sometimes he gives you a dog that is all that and more.

That is Jasper.

He makes me laugh but challenges me more than any dog I know.
He is adorably cute, but also a wonderful nursemaid when I am sick.
He is sensitive and pig-headed and smart as a whip.
And here is why I love him.

Jasper believes that…

All balls are meant to be chewed, thrown, savored and chased.

Tennis balls taste better when soaked in a pool or rolled in sand and mud.

Tennis balls can be found everywhere despite the owner’s belief that “there can’t possibly be one here.”

Joggers and bicyclists must be chased.
People dressed up like joggers must be chased.
Walkers wearing anything that might resemble running gear must be followed closely in case they run. Then they must be chased.
Water is fun but only in moderation.

Sheep, of course, must be chased.

Anyone in a bathroom is a prisoner and can and will be forced to throw a ball.
Anyone sitting down anywhere, at any time, can be made to play ball.

Sticks are a nice substitute for a ball, if one is not available. They are also fun to chew.

One cannot use the outdoor bathroom facilities when family is there to watch. One must wait until everyone goes back inside again and then ask to be let out to use the facilities in private.

Kongs with good things inside them are good. One stolen from a sibling is even better.
Bones were meant to be stolen. What is caring if not sharing?
Food must not be wasted.

Jasper was licking his chops at the prospect of eating Zuke's treats.

A thorough examination of the food preparation facility must be conducted every morning and evening.
No toy that contains treats inside of it is a deterrent. When all else fails, bang it on the floor. Treats will surely come out.

Costumes provided by the human can be endured if there is food involved.

When all else fails…

Look cute. It works.

You two are quite the team. Jasper sounds like a riot! I miss a dog that likes to retrieve. Drive ya crazy, don’t they? But they are so happy. 🙂

You described him perfectly. 🙂 I am surprised you have no retrievers in your bunch. That would be very different. I can’t imagine not having one now. LOL!

I love chasing our goat. I have to be careful because she waits for the special moment when I am not looking and butts me in the but or side. It hurts so now we just play a little and I finally learned to walk away when she has had enough. Mom throws my ball off the porch I get so excited I start to whine. sigh! I miss playing outside it has been to cold

I believe Jasper is jealous that you even have a goat. That is something he would like to have in his yard too. 🙂

Hoping you get out to play ball soon. Jasper feels your pain. This week has been so cold that just doing your business outside is difficult.

I do one business then go in for awhile then ask to go out to do the other business. I hated the cold and the wind made it worse

Thanks Debbie. He is also not afraid of the camera. Thank goodness. 🙂

Absolutely love this sweet post to Jasper. He sure keeps you on your toes doesn’t he. The vid of him herding the water is great – such creativity on his part. Thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful dog – what a fun companion – a real treasure. Lucky you; lucky him.

That video of him chasing the water on the beach is hilarious! And the picture of Jasper on the couch with the ball is so adorable! I love the expression on his face – so keen and happy! And lip-licking with the treats could not be a more perfect shot!
Moses similarly loves sticks – you need to watch him closely or he’ll devour more than a beaver would.

That was great!! Such a cutie and i can see the personality in your photos. I had an aussie several years ago that had the same ball obsession.

We all present our own challenges for Mom but most of all she is so happy none of us like playing ball. Her first dog would have died for her tennis ball and it made Mom nuts. Jasper is cute and looks like lots of fun especially since you have to deal with the ball issue!

What a delightful dog! Thanks for sharing the great video and pics. Max is not really into balls as much as playing tug or hide and seek (I hide and he seeks) lol Every dog is special in his own way. Love ’em all.

Ha ha ha! No wonder we love some of them just for being who they are! I loved this post!

What a great post! I can sympathize with the herding! Although Cooper hasn’t tried herding water yet. The ball thing would drive me nuts! But what a sweet face….
