ShelterDoggies.com – Giving back

Today I am sharing an interview with Doug Waterhouse from ShelterDoggies.com. Doug has found a unique way to raise money for dog shelters. I thought it might inspire others to find creative ways to give back too. Do you have unique or different ways for raising money or giving back to animal shelters or rescues?

What made you decide to create a website for the sole purpose of raising money for animal shelters?

This all came about because I love dogs. We (my wife and I) have always had dogs and have always gotten them from animal shelters or rescue groups. And each and every one has been special,  so I wanted to give back.

The economy stinks right now. People are having a hard time making ends meet. Pets are suffering…cats as well as dogs.

So, we sat down to see how we could raise money for animal shelters. We wanted to do it in a way that would not require folks to write a check. And, we found a way! It’s called ShelterDoggies.com.

How did you come up with the idea of ShelterDoggies.com?

We did not want to ask people for money. So, we kept our thinking caps on to find a way to help shelters without doing so. And, in time, we came up with this idea.

How did you go about creating your website?

Oh, Dear! I’m afraid that our current web site is not state of the art. It is a pretty basic, no frills thing. But, design costs money and we wanted to get funds to the shelters as soon as we could.

How does ShelterDoggies.com work?
We are a web site that acts as a portal to many companies on the web. If you link to any of our partners and decide to buy from them, we receive a small commission or referral fee. That is how we were able to send $250.00 to the Amigos. And we want to send more money to more animal shelters & rescue groups!

All we need is for more people to link to their favorite on-line stores from our links. The cost is zero, but the benefit is amazing. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Starbucks & so many more have partnered with us to help Animal Shelters.

We also have some coupon partners in our food section who will let you print money-saving coupons that you can use at your local store & help animal shelters every time you print one. You save money and the animal shelters benefit. And no ‘out of pocket’ to the giver!

I hope that we be able to write more and bigger checks to needy animal shelter and rescue groups. Please visit our Facebook page and our website & help us help other furkids!

So I understand that you just gave away your first $250. Who did you donate to?

I just signed a check for $250.00 payable to the Jemez Valley Animal Amigos in New Mexico. They are a small local no-kill group that takes in dogs and arranges for them to be adopted.

We decided that a Facebook fan should tell us where to give away the money.

Leslie, a fan of our Facebook page, nominated Jemez Valley Animal Amigos. (In 2005 Leslie & Brad adopted Luke from them. Leslie said “Luke is the best dog ever!”). We recently held a random drawing & Leslie won! So did the Amigos!

If any of you want to help Jemez Valley Animal Amigos more, please visit their website. They will gladly accept any help you can give them!

When do you hope to give your next $250 away?

As soon as we can! It is all up to people like your readers. Next time you plan to buy something on the web, check us out. You’ll pay the same price for whatever you may buy, but the animal shelters will benefit.

The hardest thing is getting folks to remember to use our site to click thru to their store. Please ask your readers to bookmark us and “friend” us on Facebook and Twitter so that our posts and tweets will remind them to use us.

You were clearly motivated to help rescues and animal shelters. How do you hope your idea inspires others?

Just never forget the poor critters that end up in shelters. Have a minute? Go to your local shelter and offer to help. It is time well spent
And, of course, please use us whenever you shop on the web.

My thanks to Doug for sharing how he is giving back to animal shelters and rescues.

So how are you giving back? I’d love to hear your stories.

This is great to know. So many shelters operate on shoestring budgets, where a small contribution goes a long way. I save all my donations for my local shelter–rather than large behemoths like the national HSUS, where much of my contribution would go to overhead.

This is a wonderful idea. I can add it to my blogroll!

They have quite a large list of partners. And it looks like they’re just starting out so it’s great they’ve already made their first donation.

I don’t buy much but I have them in my FB and Twitter feeds so I don’t forget this option.
