Animals his first priority? You be the judge

I had the opportunity to foster some really cute Sheltie puppies this past week. The lady who purchased them from a local pet store, Eagle Pet Center in Shakopee, did so because she felt she needed to save them from the conditions she found in the store. As quoted in the Star Tribune article on March 20th, Mr Dressen said, “I always make the animals the first priority, and the dusting last.”

I listened as the woman, Jane, described the conditions to KSTP (Channel 5) news in my home on Friday. She said the cat’s litter box was full of feces (she also purchased the cat), dead fish were in the fish tanks and the Shelties were going kennel crazy and had little to no bedding in their cages. She also described the two birds in the store as missing feathers and looking distressed. The store, she said, was dirty and smelled.

Since I cared for the puppies I can share my observations…

Both dogs had to be treated for fleas (the cat also had fleas by the way)
Both had spots where their fur was missing and their coat was sparse all over their bodies
Both dogs had missing fur around their eyes
Both smelled so bad I had to give them baths because my house was starting to smell
Overall, their skin condition and coats were in poor condition

So you tell me…
Did this pet store owner make his animals his first priority?
Let’s look at the pictures shall we?
You be the judge.

I cannot express the anger I am experiencing right now at seeing the signs of physical neglect in these dogs. We set the bar so high – what, does the dog actually have to have bleeding, open wounds for this to be considered neglect? – that making a case against this business will take years, and only then if people continue to fight against this businessman. All the while, animals suffer in silence so he can profit. If these actions were taken against a child, his butt would be in jail now but, because these animals cannot speak for themselves, the result is nothing.

Colleen – It appears something is finally being done. I am encouraged. It’s taken over 4 years, but maybe now he will be forced to close down.

the store has been unfit for a long time now. And there should be something done about it. my friend bought baby milk in the can and it was three years expired so she brought it back and he would not give her the money back he gave her a different one that was also expired.
Why can the animal human services step in. If it was any other business it would have been closed right away. It makes me very mad.

So agree Kelly. It has 22 years of complaints against it. I also noticed the expired products on his shelves, and the layer of dust on them, when I was last in there. It amazes me he is still in business.
